Following promising results from the Su-35 and Su-37 Super Flanker aircraft, the S-37 Berkut (Su-47 Royal Eagle) was developed by the Sukhoi Design Bureau to further explore post-stall manoeuvrability and super-manoeuvrability. This radical new aircraft features a forward swept wing, canards and wing LERXes in combination with extensive use of composite materials to enhance strength and reduce radar cross section. Although designed purely as a demonstrator aircraft, the Berkut may very well provide the basis for a fifth generation Russian fighter.
Originally designed as a testbed for fly-by-wire control systems and composite materials, the Su-47 Berkut was first flown on September 25, 1997. This experimental, supersonic aircraft has forward-swept wings, which give the aircraft a higher Maximum lift coefficient and delayed stall. Only one Su-47 was ever produced, serving as an advanced technology demonstrator prototype. Launched under the Soviet Union in 1983, funding for the Su-47 project was frozen after the dissolution of the USSR, though Sukhoi continued to develop the aircraft. The prototype performed so well that Sukhoi marketed the Su-47 as a production fighter to the Russian military and to foreign air forces. © Copyright 2003-2024 The Flying Mule, Inc.
