VMAQ-3 (Marine Tactical Electronic Warfare Squadron 3) "Moon Dogs" is one of four such USMC units. Based at MCAS Cherry Point, North Carolina they conduct airborne electronic warfare and in late 2004 were deployed to Bagram, Afghanistan. VMAQ-3 was assigned to the 455th Expeditionary Operations Group as part of Operation Enduring Freedom from January 2005 until August 2005 and was awarded a Meritorious Unit Commendation. After Afghanistan EA-6B 160436 was re-assigned a few times before being retired to Castle Air Museum in Atwater, California.

Grumman EA-6B Prowler

Developed from the EA-6A Electronic Intruder, the EA-6B is a carrier-based electronic warfare aircraft that was first flown on May 25th, 1968. The Prowler is a key element in any USN or USMC strike-force by disrupting and jamming enemy radio and radar signals, providing protection for attacking aircraft as they carry out their mission. The aircraft can also be equipped with anti-radiation missiles desigend to home-in on enemy radar installations and neutralize surface-to-air missile threats. After a long history with the EA-6B, the US Navy began transitioning to the F/A-18G Growler in 2009.
