The German Army's s.Pz.Abt. 503 was the first operational unit to receive the impressive new Tiger II in late May 1944. It arrived in Normandy the following month with 12 of these powerful Kingtiger tanks to counter the Allied landings. They first saw action on 11 July 1944. The unit was decimated in the ensuing tough fighting against the Allies, and by the time it was withdrawn from the frontline, s.Pz.Abt. 503 had just two operational tanks remaining. The latest item in the Dragon Armor 1/35 scale series is a Kingtiger from 3./s.Pz.Abt. 503. The miniature represents a Tiger II fighting at Mailly le Camp in France in August 1944. The most novel aspect of this reproduction is its Porsche turret, the first such Dragon Armor model in this scale to receive one. The distinctively streamlined turret shape lends this model an air of uniqueness. A zimmerit coating has been expertly applied to the hull and turret, and this is most realistic and lifelike in its appearance. The mighty Kingtiger is resplendent in a three-tone camouflage scheme with appropriate tactical markings. Meanwhile, craftsmen have finished it to perfection with a careful layer of weathering and dry-brushing. This model from Dragon Armor is an exciting extension of the 1/35 scale collection, and the sheer size and impact of this heavy tank have been authoritatively captured!
Officially designated Panzerkampfwagen VI Sd.Kfz 182, the King Tiger entered service in 1944. This tank carried the awesome tank-killing 88mm main gun and had four-inch armor at its thickest. The system was crewed by five personnel and two machine guns were added for self-defense. The King Tiger's ability to destroy enemy tanks at extreme ranges yet remain impervious to those same tanks made it more than a match for any Allied tank. The sight of a King Tiger on the battlefield was terrifying and did great morale damage to Allied forces. © Copyright 2003-2024 The Flying Mule, Inc.
Dragon's 1:72 scale King Tigers replicate many fine features such as intricate radiator vents, crew hatches and periscope details on the turret and front of hull. Each release features a 360-degree rotating turret and elevating cannon with hollowed muzzle break. Each of the 18 road wheels includes bolt head details that can clearly be seen through the vehicle's tracks, while access panels and torsion bar suspension are reproduced on the model's underside. The series includes the distinctively streamlined early "Porsche" turret and the shell-deflecting, late production "Henschel" design. Some releases also feature a simulated Zimmerit coating on the turret and hull.
