Dragon Models 1:35 Armor 61005
Porsche Sd.Kfz.184 Elefant Display Model
German Army sPzJgAbt 653, #232, Russia/Poland, 1944

1:35 Scale   Length   Width
Porsche Sd.Kfz.184 Elefant   7.25"   3.75"

When first introduced onto the Eastern Front at the Battle of Kursk in 1943, the Elefant, like the animal it was named after, became bit of an endangered species! It was powerful but ponderous, able to kill tanks from long ranges, but unable to defend against infantry at close ranges. Some of its defensive shortcomings were later rectified by the addition of a bow machine gun, while its 8.8cm PaK43/2 L/71 gun remained as lethal as ever. Dragon Armor has released a new 1/35 scale Sd.Kfz. 184 Elefant, which is finished in the colors and markings of a vehicle serving with PzJgAbt 653, one of the original units that fielded this new type of tank destroyer at Kursk. The three-color camouflage scheme is highly attractive, with mottled green and brown patches over a yellow base.

Porsche Sd.Kfz.184 Elefant

Presented to Hitler on March 19th, 1943, the German Panzerjäger or Elefant was originally built under the name Ferdinand, after its designer Ferdinand Porsche. A six man crew operated the 88mm gun mounted on this 70 ton tank. Engines were located in the middle of the hull, which allowed space for the armament at the rear. The Elefant's armor plate was as thick as 8 in. on the front-this helped it flatten obstacles and clear the way for lighter vehicles. The Elefant's extreme firepower/protection ratio gave it an enormous advantage; in "kills per loss," it might have been the most successful "tank destroyer" of the war.

Dragon's 1:35 scale Ferdinand Heavy Tank Destroyer series includes the improved variant known as the "Elefant." Models in this series are constructed almost entirely of diecast plastic, which helps to highlight even the smallest details such as the welding beads that are clearly visible on the upper hull surfaces. The gun casement features a commander's cupola, rear facing opened periscope hatches on top and a pivoting main gun with detailed muzzle break. Metal braided tow cables, extra track and battlefield equipment are separately attached to the hull. The vehicle's suspension system is wonderfully detailed and is clearly visible on the bottom of the hull.
