Lockheed C-5A Galaxy Diecast Model
USAF, #66-8303, Dobbins AFB, GA, Maiden Flight, June 30th 1968

1:400 Scale   Length   Width
Lockheed C-5A Galaxy   7.5"   6.75"

The first C-5A Galaxy (number 66-8303) was rolled out of the manufacturing plant in Marietta, Georgia on 2 March 1968. On 20 June 1968, Lockheed-Georgia Co. began flight testing its new Galaxy C-5A heavy transport with the aircraft's first flight taking to the air under the call-sign "eight-three-oh-three heavy" (8303H). Cost overruns and technical problems of the C-5A were the subject of a congressional investigation in 1968 and 1969. The Lockheed C-5 program bears the distinction of being the first program to produce a one billion dollar over run.

Lockheed C-5A Galaxy

Designed to meet a USAF requirement for a heavy logistics transport, the C-5 was first flown on June 30th, 1968. The t-tail configuration provides unobstructed access to the large rear loading ramp which, in combination with the massive hinged nose, allows for "drive-through" loading and unloading of cargo. The C-5 is one of the largest military aircraft ever built and its cavernous cargo compartment measures 121 feet long by 19 feet wide and 13.5 feet high. This is in addition to an upper deck with seating for 73 passengers. Current versions of the aircraft are capable of lifting up to 270,000 lbs of cargo.

Dragon's 1:400 C-5 is a large model in this scale and is constructed almost entirely of solid diecast metal with an intelligent blend of plastic components. The fuselage and wings are cast as a single unit from solid diecast metal yielding a smooth seamless joint providing for most the model's weight. This models extra-wide body fuselage is wonderfully sculpted and features pad-printed windows and doors that do not interrupt the lines of the aircraft. Each wing integrates six accurately replicated flap track fairings at the rear with fan blade details clearly visible in each of the four engines.
