Argosy XP444 first flew on September 6th, 1962 and was delivered to RAF No.267 Squadron on November 28th of that year. The following year, it transferred to No.215 squadron where it served for five years before moving to No.70 Squadron in 1968. While serving with No.70 Squadron, XP444 was the last RAF aircraft to be based permanently on the African mainland. It left El Adem, Libya, on 23 March 1970, when that base and the adjacent camp at Tobruk were closed. The airframe was eventually scrapped in 1988.
Designed to meet a British Air Ministry rquirement for a medium-range freighter, the Argosy was first flown on January 8th, 1959. The unusual "pod and boom" design earned the aircraft the nickname "The Whistling Wheelbarrow". In fact, the design served the very practical purpose of allowing for large cargo doors at each end of the fuselage for easy straight-in loading. The unobstructed cargo bay measured 47 feet long by 10 feet wide and could carry a 28,000 lb payload, in passenger configuration, could seat 89 passengers.
